Signs My Brakes Are in Bad Shape

You can prevent brake problems by having the brake system inspected every 12,000 miles. We can do that here at our auto service shop. If you fail to maintain the brake system, you may run into one or more of the following problems. These are signs that your brakes need attention right away.

Illuminated Brake Light

An illuminated Brake or ABS light on the dashboard is a sign that the brake system needs to be serviced. The only other time you will see the Brake light is when the parking brake is set. Other than that, these dashboard warning lights should only illuminate briefly when you first start your automobile.

Leaking Brown Fluid

If you have leaking brown or red fluid around the wheels, you have leaking brake hoses. If the fluid is underneath the engine, it’s possible that the master cylinder is leaking and needs to be replaced. Leaking brake fluid can make it difficult to stop your automobile, so have the leak fixed ASAP.

Loud/Strange Noises

Loud or strange noises coming from the brakes when you apply them are a sign that the brake system needs to be serviced. In most cases, this is a sign that the brake pads need to be changed. This being said, brakes that squeal all the time could be overheating.

Overheating/Squealing

Let’s talk more about this. The reason why brakes squeal when they overheat is that the brake pads and rotors are glazed. In addition to the squealing sound, you may also smell burning odors coming from the brake system. Overheated brakes may fail, so pull over and stop driving your automobile.

Pedal Resistance Changes

We mentioned above that the brake hoses can leak; they can also get air in them. When this happens, the brake pedal may sink underneath your foot. All pockets of air must be removed from the brake lines by bleeding them. We can do that at our shop.

Pulling to the Side

Stuck calipers will make your vehicle pull to the side when you apply the brakes. Unfortunately, they can also make your vehicle wobble or shake, as can warped rotors. In addition, your automobile may vibrate if the brake pads are worn down completely.

Give us a call today if it has been longer than 12,000 miles since your last brake inspection. We would be happy to inspect the brake system and make any necessary repairs or perform any necessary services.
